The Five D's of Bystander Intervention

01. Direct

Take immediate action by confronting the harmful behaviour directly. This involves speaking up firmly and clearly, making it known that the behavior is not acceptable.

02. Delegate

Get help from someone else. Scan the situation to assess risk and determine how to best intervene. Then, delegate tasks to others around you.

03. Distract

Create some form of distraction and interrupt the flow of violence. A key with this step is to engage directly with the person being targeted.

04. Delay

Check in with those affected, offering comfort and reassurance that the incident is not their fault. The responsibility lies with those who engaged in the behaviour.

05. Document

Record inappropriate behaviour/violence so there is a record available from a third-party witness to provide as evidence if necessary.
